People in the Conn Lab

Graeme Conn, PhDGraeme Conn, PhD
Associate Professor
gconn@emory.edu

Graeme received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and followed this with postdoctoral research as a Wellcome Trust International Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Graeme was a faculty member at UMIST/ The University of Manchester, UK, from 2000 and joined the Department of Biochemistry at Emory as an Associate Professor in September 2008.

Brenda CalderonBrenda Calderon
Graduate Student, BCDB Program
bcalder@emory.edu

Brenda received her Bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida in 2011. She next came to Emory and the BCDB program in the Fall of 2012 and joined the Conn lab in summer 2013. Brenda’s project is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which cellular and viral non-coding RNAs regulate proteins of the innate immune system such as PKR and OAS. Brenda is an Atlanta Chapter ARCS Scholar.

Debayan Dey, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
debayan.dey@emory.edu

Debayan received his  Bachelors degree in Physics and Masters degree in Biophysics from Calcutta University, India. He received his Ph.D. in Crystallography and Structural biology from Physics Department of Indian Institute of Science in 2016. After a short postdoctoral work at Indian Institute of Science  and Poornaprajna Institute of Scientific Research, India, he joined the Conn lab in June 2017. His research will focus on structural and functional studies underpinning the antibiotic-resistance conferred by ribosomal RNA methyltransferases.

Zane LaughlinZane Laughlin
Graduate Student, BCDB Program
zane.timothy.laughlin@emory.edu

Originally from Forest, VA, Zane completed his Bachelor’s in Chemistry with specialization in Biochemistry at the University of Virginia in 2016. He joined the BCDB graduate program at Emory in the Fall of 2016. Zane’ scientific interests in biochemistry center on protein structure and function. In June 2017, Zane joined the Conn Lab where his research will focus on understanding the structure, function and activities of ribosomal RNA methyltransferase enzymes.

Meisam Nosrati, PhD
Postdoctoral Fellow
meisam.nosrati@emory.edu

Meisam received his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry at the Michigan State University in 2015 and joined the Conn lab in early 2017 following brief postdoctoral studies at Michigan and Rice University. His research will focus on structure-function studies of antibiotic-resistance rRNA methyltransferases.

Samantha Schwartz

Samantha Schwartz
Graduate Student, BCDB Program
samantha.l.schwartz@emory.edu

Samantha received her Bachelors degree in Biology from Armstrong Atlantic State University in 2012 and after working as a research technician, joined the BCDB program at Emory in Fall 2015. Samantha joined the Conn lab in May 2016 where her thesis research will focus on molecular mechanisms of RNA-mediated regulation of innate immune system proteins. Sam is the current recipient of a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Fellowship (F31) from NIH/NIAID for this work.

Kellie VinalKellie Vinal
Graduate Student, MMG Program
kvinal@emory.edu

Kellie received her Bachelors degree in Microbiology, with minors in Genetics and Biotechnology, from North Carolina State University in 2009. After working at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences with a post baccalaureate intramural research training award, Kellie came to Emory and the MMG program and joined the Conn lab in summer 2012. Kellie’s project aims to decipher the molecular determinants of specific target site recognition and modification by the aminoglycoside-resistance A1408 rRNA methyltransferase family.

Natalia ZelinskayaNatalia Zelinskaya, Ph.D.
Research Specialist, Lead
nzelins@emory.edu

Natalia received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at Moscow State University, Russia. She continued as a research scientist at the Institute of Protein Research, Pushchino, Russia, Natalia and was a Royal Society visiting researcher at the University of Reading, UK, and Royal Society/ NATO Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Sheffield, UK. In 2008 Natalia became the first Conn lab member at Emory. Her research focuses on antibiotic-resistance rRNA methyltransferases.
