People in the Conn Lab

Graeme Conn, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Graeme received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and followed this with postdoctoral research as a Wellcome Trust International Fellow at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Graeme was a faculty member at UMIST/ The University of Manchester, UK, from 2000 and joined the Department of Biochemistry at Emory as an Associate Professor in September 2008.

Pooja Desai, PhD

Pooja Desai, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Pooja received her Bachelors degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from BMCPER, North Gujarat University, India, 2003. She conducted her Ph.D. thesis research on the rRNA methyltransferase and ribosome biogenesis factor KsgA, at the Institute for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery, Virginia Commonwealth University. Pooja joined the Conn lab in September 2010 continuing her interests in rRNA methyltransferases with studies of aminoglycoside resistance enzymes.

Emily Kuiper

Graduate Student, BCDB Program

Emily received her B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, in 2010. Emily enrolled in the BCDB graduate program at Emory later the same year and joined the Conn lab in 2011. Her research will center on mechanisms of protein-RNA recognition in ribosomal RNA modification by antibiotic-resistance methyltransferases using biochemical, biophysical and structural biology approaches.

Sunita Subramanian, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Sunita received her B. Tech at the Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University, Chennai, India, and her Ph.D. at the National University of Singapore. Sunita joined the Conn lab in January 2011, where she continues her research involving biochemical and structural characterization of RNA-protein complexes focusing specifically on the mechanism of inhibition of the double-stranded RNA-activated protein kinase PKR by viral RNAs.

Ginny Vachon

Graduate Student, MMG Program

Ginny received her B.A. in Biology from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA. Ginny enrolled in the MMG graduate program at Emory in 2009 and joined the Conn lab the following year. Ginny’s research will focus on the structure and activity of viral non-coding RNAs and characterization of their interactions with human host cell proteins.

Jo Wilson

Jo Linpinsel

Research Specialist

Jo received her B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, GA in 2010. As an undergraduate, Jo spent a summer on the NSF REU Program at the University of California, Irvine where she studied self-cleaving RNA enzymes (ribozymes). Jo continues her adventures in the ‘RNA World’ with her current research on the structure and activity of the non-coding adenoviral RNA transcript VA RNA.

Natalia Zelinskaya

Research Specialist, Lead

Natalia received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at Moscow State University, Russia. She continued as a research scientist at the Institute of Protein Research, Pushchino, Russia, Natalia and was a Royal Society visiting researcher at the University of Reading, UK, and Royal Society/ NATO Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Sheffield, UK. In 2008 Natalia became the first Conn lab member at Emory. Her research focuses on antibiotic-resistance rRNA methyltransferases.
