The lysosome is an acidic vesicle which is responsible for a variety of hydrolytic reactions. Typically, these vesicles contain phosphatases, proteases, lipases, etc. It is part of a more extensive series of compartments called the reticulo-endothelial system, which is involved in protein and receptor traffic. There are two types of protein uptake into these vesicles, non-specific phagocytosis or pinocytosis, and specific uptake mediated by a specific receptor, HSC73. The equivalent organelle in Yeast is the acidic vacuole. .
