Courses in Biochemistry
MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY 515/IBS528 (Requirement for 1st year Emory University School of Medicine Students):
This course deals with the biochemistry of the human body in health and disease. Much of medical practice now has a sound biochemical basis, making it impossible for you to learn all of the relevant aspects of human biochemistry in a single one-semester course. Consequently, the goal is for you to learn about the major macromolecules of living cells and the fundamental biochemical principles that underlie their functioning within the major metabolic pathways of the human body. Such knowledge will allow you to understand how these biochemical processes change during disease, and understand how such processes offer opportunities for prevention, medical intervention and treatment and management of disease. Also, realization of these goals will provide a foundation for your continued learning of human biochemistry throughout your medical career. The Course Objectives are to:
- Illustrate the clinical relevance of certain biochemical processes discussed in lectures and readings.
- Demonstrate that a real understanding of basic biochemical processes allows a better understanding of human pathology.
- Encourage and help you to go beyond the limits of knowledge presented in class and thereby increase your understanding of certain biochemical topics that are of particular interest.
- Demonstrate that even as first-year medical students you can experience the excitement of successfully “diagnosing and treating” a patient with a complex and serious medical problem.
- Encourage you to develop a good understanding of the lecture material soon after it is presented, rather than delaying this process until the examination period.
- Indicate the gaps in our knowledge of molecular medicine and inspire those of you who are considering careers in biomedical research.
- Encourage you to exhibit professionalism in your attitude, behaviors, and communications.
