The absolute compartmentalization of the genetic material within the nucleus of the eukaryotic cell creates a critical control point for intracellular signaling. Whenever expression of specific genes is regulated in response to an intra- or extracellular signal, information is transferred across the nuclear envelope. Our goal is to understand the mechanistic details of how macromolecules move into and out of the nucleus to transduce these signals. We use the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system to study this highly conserved process.
